Thanks for visiting our store.  While we operate online, we are powered by a small team based in Portland Oregon. Imagine a record store housed in an "A-Frame" cabin in the middle of a forest just outside of town. That is the liminal space in which our store operates.  Welcome in!   いらっしゃい !  

The LIMINAL Music shop takes inspiration from our favorite record stores around the world.  From Music Millennium here in Portland (the oldest store in the Pacific Northwest) to Amoeba Music in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley (RIP), Waterloo and End of an Ear in Austin, Grimey's in Nashville.  And Disk Union, Tower Records and others in Tokyo, Japan. 12 Tonar in Reykjavic, Iceland. Sounds of the Universe in London.

 LIMINAL Music is a creative music agency based in Portland Oregon and working worldwide.  We search for musical inspiration for films, tv shows and advertisements.

 LIMINAL Music Shop is our record store. We apply that same curation approach to our store and want to share new music discoveries and long-loved gems with you here.

After 15 years leading the music supervision effort at Nike, I started LIMINAL Music in 2022. The goal was to expand our team to better serve the advertising industry and to incubate creative projects around music.  The LIMINAL Music Shopis one of those projects.  

We have over 20 years experience in the music industry as music supervisors, radio DJs, band managers, A&R and have worked at record labels and in online music. We are record collectors, fans and champions of great music.

We create, curate and license music for film, TV and advertising. A key to our success has been a deep, unbinding love of music.  The core of that love is the "crate digging" process of seeking out music from the dusty corners of the world and not relying on the algorithm.

Our first focus is Japan. We have imported some great music, movies, toys and books from Tokyo and have these sections:

• Jazz: Japanese Jazz and pressings / releases from Japan

• City Pop and indie rock

• Soundtracks: from Anime and Super Hero films to TV shows and video games. And Japanese releases of Western films like Star Wars, etc.

• Cool releases and Japanese pressings: albums like the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Madonna, Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Radiohead etc. often with iconic OBI strips and exclusive supplemental material and inserts

• Toys: super hero figures, kaiju monsters, card games and collectibles

• Movies (Anime and Super Heroes)

• Books and magazines: deep dives on genres, artist and labels

• Christmas:  I curate and report on Christmas music for OPB, KMHD and the Oregon Zoo.  At the shop we LPs and Cds from Japan (and beyond!)
